The bronze birch borer
The bronze birch borer prefers stressed or injured trees. Light infestations kill the upper branches of trees under attack, but heavy infestations may cause the death of the entire tree.
Some of the causes that predispose birch to borer attack are

defoliation from other insects,
injuries caused to the tree by storms,
mower damage,
improper pruning,
improper planting (too deep or too high),
improper fertilization or just plain old age.
The borer can not survive in healthy trees.

Three applications are generally required during the spring and summer (mid-May, mid-June, and mid-July).
